Young researchers conference in cognitive science

Montréal, August 19^th, 20^th & 21^st 2006.

We have received the following questions by email. We publish them here, reworded and with answers, for the benefit of all.

• Can I submit more then one abstract?
  No. Just send us the one you think is the most appropriate.
• I just want to attend the conference, should I register or pay?
  No. Access to the conference is both open and free.
• Will the conference proceedings be published?
  Yes. We are currently talking with our editor about publishing the Cognitio 2006 proceedings. Whatever the result of these discussions, we can commit ourselves to at least online publication.
• If I give a talk, do I have to send you a paper for the proceedings?
  No. Participation in the proceedings is optional. But let us remind you that it's both good for Cognitio and for your CV.
• I'd like to give a talk at Cognitio. Should I send you a complete paper?
  No. Just a 300 word abstract. If you are selected and want your work to appear in Cognitio's proceedings, you will have a few weeks after the conference to send us a paper.
• How will you select abstracts ?
  An interdisciplinary scientific committee will read and evaluate the abstracts. The criteria of selection will be:

  • quality of presented research;
  • comprehensibility of the theoretical or practical stakes;
  • originality;
  • relevance for the field of cognitive science.
• Will abstracts be blind reviewed?
  Yes. No member of the organisation comitee that will get your email is also on the scientific comitee. Members of the scientific comitee will receive an anonymous version of your abstract.
• What do you mean precisely by “cognitive sciences”?
  “Cognitive science is the interdisciplinary study of mind and intelligence, embracing philosophy, psychology, artificial intelligence, neuroscience, linguistics, and anthropology.” (Thagard, Paul, « Cognitive Science », The Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy (Winter 2004 Edition), Edward N. • Can I gave a talk on a subject about wich I have already sent a submission to a journal or published an article?
  Yes. If you want your work to appear in the proceedings afterwards though, you'll have to send us an original contribution.
• Is the conference exclusively for students?
  No. Speakers are students but there will be teachers, students and researchers among the audience.
• Can I give a conference that's been co-authored with a teacher?
  Yes. Provided that a student is the main speaker.
• In which language should I give my talk?
  English or French. Most Montrealers are bilingual : if you speak slowly and clearly, they should understand you.
• Can I use a PowerPoint presentation?
  Yes. We will have a projector and a computer for the presentations.
• Do I have to use a PowerPoint presentation?
  No. But note that a visual presentation might be a nice way to make it easier for an audience whose first language might not necessarily be yours.
• Can I get financing to give talk at Cognitio?
  We are trying to get money for speakers from outside Quebec. Any financing is tied to the results of our search and we cannot garantee anything.
• What will be the rules of attribution for financing?
  The rules of attribution are not defined yet, but we will make them known to speakers once they are.
